Day 1: Did you say Bitcoin when you meant a different type of cryptocurrency?

Truth be told, when I first learned about cryptocurrency, I thought everything was called Bitcoin. 🤪

Me: What Bitcoin do you have?

Friend: You mean cryptocurrencies? I have Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and PEPE.

Me: Aren’t they all Bitcoin?

Like many others, I assumed they were the same thing. It wasn’t until I explored the crypto space that I realised how wrong I was. If you’ve ever called Bitcoin “cryptocurrency” or vice versa, don’t worry—you’re not alone!

When people say “Bitcoin,” they’re referring to a specific type of digital currency. When they say “cryptocurrency,” they’re talking about the entire group, which includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and thousands of others.

Why the Confusion?

Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto. As the pioneer, Bitcoin became synonymous with the concept of digital currencies. It’s like calling all tissues “Kleenex” or all sodas “Coke.” But as the crypto world evolved, so did the variety of cryptocurrencies, each with its own unique features and purposes.

A Mom-Friendly Toy Analogy

Let’s break it down with a simple analogy: toys!

Imagine your kids’ toy box. Inside, there’s a doll, a toy car, some building blocks, and an action figure. Cryptocurrency is like the entire toy box—a collection of different types of digital money. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is just one toy in that box. It’s the first and most famous toy, but it’s not the only one.

Now picture your child asking for a “toy.” You grab a doll, but they really wanted the toy car. Bitcoin is like that doll—it’s specific. Cryptocurrency is the general term for all toys in the box. Calling Bitcoin “cryptocurrency” is like calling the doll “a toy”—technically correct, but it misses the details.

Another way to think about it: Bitcoin is like the first toy ever invented, the one that sparked the whole concept of toys. Cryptocurrencies are all the other toys that followed, each building on the original idea with their own twists.

Wrapping Up

If you’ve ever used “Bitcoin” and “cryptocurrency” interchangeably, that’s okay! It’s a common starting point. The key takeaway is that Bitcoin is just one part of the much larger cryptocurrency world.
